WRSC Kicks Off National Rollout of e-WRS with Stakeholder Training in Nakuru County
Marking a significant step in Kenya’s journey toward agricultural modernization, the Council, in collaboration with TradeMark Africa, initiated a stakeholder training program in Nakuru County. This event signaled the launch of the national roll-out of the Electronic Warehouse Receipt System (e-WRS) and its Central Registry designed to digitize the country’s commodity trading landscape. The objective of the training was to deepen stakeholder understanding, build confidence in the system, and promote its adoption in counties across the nation by showcasing the tangible advantages of structured commodity trading.
The Nakuru training brought together stakeholders from the agricultural value chain, including warehouse operators, farmer organizations, county government officials, and representatives from Hello Tractor and the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB). Their participation highlighted a strong commitment to enhancing transparency, operational efficiency, and accountability in Kenya’s agricultural market systems.
Delivering remarks on behalf of WRSC Ag. CEO Lucy Komen, Mr. Leonard Mwashuma reflected on the Council’s notable achievements since its formation. These include the launch of the WRS Operations Manual in 2022, and the launch of the WRSC Strategic Plan for 2023–2027, and Warehouse Receipt Financing Manual. He commended Nakuru County for its leadership in the WRS, recognizing it as the first county where commodities we deposited in a certified warehouse in 2021 at Nakuru NCPB, as well as the first to implement warehouse receipt-based financing.
As part of the visit, the WRSC delegation paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Hon. David Kones, the Deputy Governor of Nakuru County. The Deputy Governor reiterated the county’s support for expanding the WRS and its impact on local farmers. He committed to supporting Training of Trainers (ToT) programs to equip county staff with the knowledge needed to sensitize farmers on WRS. In addition, he emphasized inclusive participation, pledging to support youth, women, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in leveraging digital tools for agricultural trade. He encouraged young people to participate in the system by storing produce in certified warehouses, accessing receipts, and using them to obtain affordable financing for scaling up agribusinesses.
