The council has concluded a week-long sensitization program in Kisumu County focused on the Warehouse Receipt System (WRS) within the rice value chain. This initiative aimed to enhance awareness of the WRS in the region, pre-inspect potential warehouses for certification, and visit organized aggregation centers. These activities are crucial for establishing the basis of volumes to be deposited in certified warehouses.
The council collaborated with several institutions to ensure the success of this program, including: County Government of Kisumu, Presidential Economic Transformation Secretariat (PETS), International Finance Corporation (IFC), Kenya Multi commodities Exchange (KOMEX), USAID Kenya, National Irrigation Authority (NIA), National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), Agriculture Finance Corporation (AFC), Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), Kenya National Farmers Federation (KENAFF) and Africa Warehouse Holdings (AWH).
Engaging with key officials such as County Commissioner Mr. Benson Leparmorijo and Kisumu County Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Ochieng Owili.
Sensitizing county staff from the Agriculture, Trade, and Cooperatives departments and various irrigation schemes about the WRS.
Pre-inspecting the Kisumu National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) Depot and Lake Basin Development Authority to assess their readiness for certification.
Sensitizing financial institutions, traders, aggregators, and rice millers about the benefits of the WRS.
This comprehensive approach not only aims to improve the understanding of the Warehouse Receipt System but also to enhance the rice value chain in Kisumu County, ultimately benefiting local farmers and stakeholders.
