Mauka Warehouse Launch: The first Farmer-Owned Certified Warehouse in Kenya
The Council recently participated in the launch of the Mauka Warehouse in Mauche, Nakuru County, a historic event marking the certification of Kenya’s first farmer-owned warehouse under the Warehouse Receipt System (WRS). The event was organized by Hello Tractor, now certified as a warehouse operator under the WRS, and officiated by H.E. Dr. David Kones, Deputy Governor of Nakuru County.
The event brought together a diverse group of partners, including; County Government of Nakuru, International Finance Corporation, Financial Sector Deepening Kenya, Kenya National Multi Commodities Exchange, Eastern Africa Grain Council, Fresh Crop, YARA, Africa Warehouse Holdings, several financial institutions, Farmer Cooperatives and Millers.
The certification of Mauka Warehouse under WRS marks a significant step toward building a robust infrastructure that fosters trust and credibility. By ensuring commodities stored meet high-quality standards, the WRS system aims to transform how farmers access markets and financial services.
The Council’s Chairperson emphasized that “The adherence to the standards set and efforts to deliver quality service will not only benefit clients but also inspire confidence in the entire WRS ecosystem.”
During the event, Deputy Governor Dr. David Kones highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts among stakeholders to expand access to warehousing facilities. He reaffirmed Nakuru County’s commitment to supporting the partnership between Mauka Cooperative and Hello Tractor. Dr. Kones stated that, “The justification for the warehouse operation lies in the need to provide farmers with access to secure storage facilities, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve market access through WRS, which can be used as collateral for loans and other financial services.”
